THE KINGDOM & THE POWER!

ATTITUDES OF BEING

Based Upon

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

a thematic approach

Background:

Found in the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 5, 6 & 7, the Sermon covers the essentials of Jesus’ teachings.

UNIVERSAL TRUTH:

In the Beatitudes, Jesus parallels a universal theme found in all of the world’s religions.  Direct correlation is found in the Budha’s 8-fold path and the 8-limbs of Raja Yoga from the Hindu tradition.

Session 7: The Kingdom & The Power – Part 2, understanding the “Lord’s Prayer”

Matthew 6:9-13; “Pray then in this way: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.” NRSV

SM 162, “Give us this day our daily bread… But in order to obtain these things, we have to claim them… we have to recognize God and God alone as the Source and fountainhead of all our good.”

DPWY 117, “Forgive us our debts as we also have forgiven our debtors… This indicates the working of the great Cosmic Law. Give and receive, cause and effect, forgive and you are forgiven.”

PC 34, “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil… don’t let surface things delude us, but free us from what holds us back.”

SM 181, “Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory for ever and ever… The kingdom in this sense means all creation, on every plane, for that is the Presence of God – God as manifestation or expression.”

Hindu:

“According to the Yogis, there are two nerve currents in the spinal column… and a hollow canal running through the spinal cord. At the lower end of the hollow canal is what the Yogis call the “Lotus of the kundalini”… When that kundalini awakes… it rises step by step… layer after layer of the mind becomes open and all the different visions and wonderful powers come to the Yogi. When it reaches the brain, the Yogi is perfectly detached from the body and mind; the soul finds itself free.” Swami Vivekananda

Buddhist:

“Now, this is the noble truth concerning suffering… the noble truth concerning the origin of suffering… the noble truth concerning the destruction of suffering… the noble truth concerning the sway which leads to the destruction of sorrow. Verily, it is this noble eightfold path.” Sermon at Benares
